Traditional metal braces are what most people associate orthodontic treatment with. They are used to straighten teeth, correcting bad bites (malocclusions), such as under and over-bites, and various other flaws of the teeth and jaws, whether cosmetic or structural.
How do braces work?
Braces consist of two main components, brackets and archwires. The brackets are specially shaped pieces of metal or ceramic which are glued to the front of each tooth. A thin wire, known as an archwire connects these brackets, and help to move your teeth into position using gentle force. Elastic bands, also known as ligatures, are also used to help straighten your teeth.
At Scott Smith Orthodontics, we recommend traditional metal braces to many of our patients as they have a number of benefits:
The length of time you will need to wear braces differs from patient to patient. On average, people usually wear braces for up to two years, followed by a retainer to keep your teeth straight.
